Analysis of Institutional Factors Affecting Optimization of Coffee Yields in Chuka Sub-County, ..
Because of its contribution in developing countries in areas such as job development and foreign exchange, coffee production has a significant impact on the global economy.
The majority of coffee-producing countries have devised strategies to increase their production while also improving the quality of their product.
Kenya's government has also implemented a number of policies to promote coffee production at the farm level, but coffee production in Kenya has been declining since the 1989 crop year. In most coffee-growing areas, other lucrative industries such as real estate and the dairy sector have emerged, but many farmers have remained committed to maintaining coffee production.
Despite the government's efforts to increase coffee production in terms of quality and quantity, production has declined, with some farmers fully abandoning production.
The aim of this study was to determine the factors that influence coffee production optimization in the Chuka sub-county of Tharaka-Nithi County. A total of 153 respondents were chosen from a population of 7,428 small-scale coffee farmers from ten cooperatives in the subCounty using proportional stratified random sampling. With a mean agreement of 58.33 percent, the study's findings indicated that access to extension, access to research, and management of a coffee cooperative were important in coffee production. According to the findings, access to extension (5%) and cooperative management (5%) were statistically important, while access to analysis (5%) was statistically insignificant.Similarly, access to extension services increased optimization by 91%, weak coffee cooperative management reduced production by 45.1 percent, and access to research increased coffee production by 51%. As a result, it's critical to ensure that farmers have access to extension services, science, and better coffee cooperative management.
