Assessment of the Level of Awareness of Health Hazards and Practices of Waste Scavengers in Enugu

Waste scavengers in underdeveloped countries are informal stars in the recycling of tons of waste generated in city centers. These scavengers are often weak and uneducated persons the one may be unknowing or too weak to mind the hazards of their profession. The aim of this study search out assess the level of knowledge of health hazards guide waste scavenging among scavengers in Enugu, Nigeria, as well as evaluate their attitude towards cancer-causing agent and safety. Three hundred and ninety-five (395) waste scavengers were picked by way of multistage and random sampling method from the three senatorial zones in Enugu State and executed close ended questionnaire. Results displayed 72.7% poor level of knowledge of health hazards among waste harvester and 63.6% poor level of stance towards precautionary measures to cancer-causing agent and safety. There is a positive connection between level of instruction, marital status and knowledge of health hazards, and betwixt age, religion, level of instruction, marital status, pay and attitude towards strength hazards and safety.
