Awareness of Causes and Health Risks Associated with High Blood Cholesterol among Men in Awka ......
The study's aim was to determine whether men in Awka-Etiti, Nigeria, were aware of the causes and health risks associated with high blood cholesterol (HBC).
The study was conducted using a descriptive survey research design.
The event will take place in Awka-Etiti, Anambra State, Nigeria, in 2019.
Methodology: The study included 300 adult men aged 25 and up as participants. The key tool for data collection was a formal questionnaire. The instrument's validity was checked using face validity. The split-half approach was used to assess the instrument's reliability, yielding a coefficient of 0.61.
Results: In the study area, there was a low level of knowledge of triggers (56%) and a moderate level of awareness of risks (65%) associated with HBC. Younger and older ages, as well as higher educational attainment, were found to be determinants of greater understanding of HBC causes and risks. A significance test revealed links between age and awareness of HBC triggers (P=.006) and age and awareness of HBC risks (P=.001). There were no important correlations between marital status and knowledge of HBC triggers (P=.221), or between marital status and knowledge of HBC risks (P=.221).
Conclusion: Some minority groups in the sample population still have low levels of HBC knowledge. To reduce this burden, public health education and the promotion of healthier lifestyles are recommended.
