Changes in Some Biochemical Parameters and Body Weights of Healthy Albino Rats Following Palm-wine..
The aim of this study was to see how palm wine influenced liver function, antioxidant parameters, and body weight in albino rats.
Randomized block design was used in this study.
Between June and August 2019, I studied at Nasarawa State University's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Laboratory in Keffi, Nasarawa State, Nigeria.
Twenty adult male albino rats were divided into five groups of four rats each, with group 1 serving as the monitor. For 28 days, the experimental groups were given fresh and prolonged-fermented palm wine in the following amounts: Group 2: 15ml/ kg fresh palm wine, Group 3: 15ml/ kg prolonged fermented palm wine, Group 4: 30ml/ kg fresh palm wine, Group 5: 30 ml/ kg prolonged fermented palm wine.
When opposed to the control (10.5050.121), AST behaviour decreased significantly (P0.05) in groups 3 (9.6150.225), 4 (9.8600.162), and 5 (9.3900.624). When comparing group 5 (7.4150.548) to control, ALT behaviour was found to be significantly lower (P0.05). When compared to the control (8.2500.577), ALP decreased significantly (P0.05) in group 3 (7.3950.710). As compared to the control (0.6500.012), total bilirubin was slightly (P0.05) lower in groups 3 (0.1200.041) and 5 (0.1700.012). When compared to the monitor, MDA levels in groups 2, 3, and 5 decreased significantly (P 0.05). SOD levels in group 2 (2.7350.110) were slightly lower (P0.05) than in control (2.9900.012). As compared to regulation, groups 4 (2.7000.046) and 5 (2.7100.346) showed a substantial (P 0.05) decrease in GPX. GSH levels were significantly higher (P 0.05) in groups 4 (5.9500.058) and 5 (5.9250.064) than in control (3.1100.035). In comparison to week 2, the rats' mean body weights had decreased significantly (P0.05) in both groups by the third week.
Conclusion: While palm wine had no major toxic effects on liver biomarkers and may not have triggered oxidative stress, it did decrease the rats' body weights in the third week after administration.
