Comparative Analysis for the Treatment of Hemorrhoids Using Harmonic Scalpel versus Conventional Hem
Hemorrhoidectomy is one of the most efficient treatments for haemorrhoids in grades III and IV. The goal of this study was to compare the results and postoperative consequences of harmonic scalpel hemorrhoidectomy to traditional hemorrhoidectomy.
Between April 2004 and April 2020, 1120 individuals were operated on for symptomatic Grade III/IV haemorrhoids in this retrospective analysis. The operation was performed by Ferguson closed method employing monopolar electrocautery in the standard hemorrhoidectomy patient group, whereas the other patient group was operated with a harmonic scalpel. Patient demographic information was gathered, as well as typical patient complaints. Operation duration and blood loss during the procedure were noted. Regular follow up of the patients was done for 4 weeks, and postoperative pain relief was recorded using the Visual Analog Scale. Finally, patient satisfaction and complete wound healing were analyzed along with postoperative complications like incontinence, secondary hemorrhage, recurrence, and anal stenosis.
The demographic parameters of the patients and their preoperative complaints were identical in both groups. The harmonic scalpel procedure resulted in reduced blood loss and a quicker operating duration. The patients who received harmonic scalpel hemorrhoidectomy saw significantly improved postoperative pain alleviation. Patient satisfaction and wound healing were also improved as a result of the harmonic hemorrhoidectomy process. Both groups had a low rate of postoperative complications.
Conclusion: Harmonic scalpel hemorrhoidectomy achieves simultaneous tissue and vascular sealing and is a safe and successful technique. When compared to a traditional hemorrhoidectomy surgery, it reduces the length of the process, blood loss, postoperative pain, and problems.
