Evaluation of Integrated Farming System Model for Resource Recycling and Livelihood Security of Smal
At the All India Coordinated Project on Integrated Farming System, PJTSAU, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad from 2010-11 onwards, the Integrated Farming System (IFS) model comprising components such as wheat, horticulture, diary, sheep and poultry rearing was undertaken. Holistic integration of animals with crops in 1 ha area resulted in a total production of 36.4 t REY ha-1 with a benefit cost ratio of 0.85 and a net income of Rs.2,97,770/- with total operating expenditure of Rs.3,48,796/- compared to an average net income of Rs. 52,000 for farmers in the Telangana State Southern Telangana Region in addition to generating 602 days of jobs Of this total net income, the current Crop-Livestock-Horticulture model reported 54.02 percent returns from the crop component including fodder, 10.43 percent returns from the horticultural component and 31.9 percent from the livestock unit, along with production of various farm family needs such as cereals, pulses, oil seeds, fruits, vegetables, milk, meat and cattle fodder. 11.47 t of FYM, 70 kg of LPG equivalent gas and 1.81 t of biogas slurry were produced through residue recycling and manure processing, equal to 91-42-75 kg of N, P and K and saved at Rs 12133/-. Over these years, continuous use of crop residues and manures by residue recycling helped increase the soil fertility of the unit from an initial status of 0.35 percent in ID block to 0.53 percent with a significant improvement in organic carbon. The integrated approach to the farming system recorded 37.7 and 52.2 percent higher productivity and profitability compared to the traditional rice-groundnut system, respectively.
