Frequency and Determinants of Erectile Dysfunction among Type 2 Diabetes Patients in a Tertiar......

Background: In males with diabetes mellitus, sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction, is a common consequence. As a result, the goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) and identify risk variables in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM).

Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 147 males with type 2 diabetes who were recruited from a tertiary health institution in Nigeria's diabetic clinic. An shortened version of the international index of erectile function (IIEF–5) was used to assess ED. Age, education, occupation, and marital status were all assessed, as was medical history, which included diabetes duration, smoking, alcohol intake, and the frequency and style of sexual intercourse.

The average age of the study participants was 68.2212.15 years. The prevalence of ED was 69.5 percent, with mild, mild-moderate, moderate, and severe dysfunctions accounting for 14.3 percent, 14.3 percent, 10.5 percent, and 29.9 percent, respectively. The prevalence of ED rose with age, diabetes duration, and obesity, but not with glycemic management, alcohol consumption, or smoking.

Conclusions: In South-West Nigeria, ED was very common among men with DM. As a result, efforts must be made to lower the high prevalence by addressing the conditions that contribute to its emergence. Patients may not readily disclose this information, therefore health care providers must ask about it on a frequent basis.
