Genetic Variability in Summer Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) | International Journal of Plant & ....

Twenty-two genotypes of brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) were collected and grown during the summer season, and variability estimates for twenty-two different production, yield, and attributing traits were studied. Characters like length of style, fruit girth, average fruit weight, number of fruits per plant, yield per plant, total yield per hectare, total sugar, reducing sugar, titrable acidity, ascorbic acid, total antioxidant ability, total phenolic content, and polyphenol oxidase had high genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation. Plant height, number of primary branches, length of style, fruit length, fruit girth, average fruit weight, number of fruit per plant, yield per plant, total yield per hectare, TSS, total sugar, reducing sugar, titrable acidity, ascorbic acid, total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, and polyp heritability and genetic gain as percent of mean were found to be large. The high heritability of these traits, combined with the high expected genetic benefit, indicates that selection based on these traits may improve yield and quality.
