Hypothyroidism and Platelet Parameter Evaluation | Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical ....

The aim of this study was to see how mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width is affected by subclinical and overt hypothyroidism (PDW).

The research was performed in a cross-sectional manner.

The research took place between June 2018 and June 2019 at Tanta University's Diabetes, Metabolism, and Endocrinology Unit, which is part of the internal medicine department and clinical pathology.

Methodology: We studied 250 people: 50 safe controls and 200 hypothyroid patients (all female; 18 years old) with no medical history. Patients were then split into two groups: newly diagnosed and those taking l-thyroxin. All of them had their platelet parameters (MPV, PDW) measured.

MPV and PDW was higher in hypothyroid patients than in the control group (8.93 0.62), and in the overt group (10.88 0.57) than in the subclinical group (10.02 0.55). There was no substantial decrease in MPV or PDW in patients taking l-thyroxin, implying that l-thyroxin therapy would not make a difference until patients reached their euthyroid target stage.

Conclusion: In patients with subclinical and overt hypothyroidism, we suggest using MPV and PDW as inexpensive markers of platelet activation in the diagnostic work-up of atherothrombotic complications danger.
