Incidence of Urinary Tract Infection among Diabetic Patients in Abakaliki Metropolis | Journal of ..

With the aim of isolating and identifying different types of bacteria and their respective frequencies among diabetic patients attending diabetic clinic at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, 100 mid-stream urine specimens were used to investigate urinary tract infection (UTI) among diabetic patients 15-51 years and above. To make the diagnosis, a urine culture was used in conjunction with a complete urine report. The majority of bacteria in urinary tract infections were found in the 27-32 year old age group (71.4%), while the lowest were found in the 15-20 year old age group (0 percent ). Escherichia coli (39.13 percent), Klebsiella pneumonia (21.74 percent), Proteus (8.69 percent), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (8.69 percent), Streptococcus (8.69 percent), Staphylococcus aureus (6.52 percent), Enterococcus faecalis (6.52 percent) are the most common bacteria isolates (4.25 percent ). In comparison to males, females had a higher prevalence of isolated species (47.7%). (36 percent ). As a result, Escherichia coli is the most common cause of UTI in diabetic patients in Abakaliki Metropolis, followed by Klebsiella pneumonia.
