Influence of Social Media on Reading Culture among Nigerian Polytechnic Students

This original long student essay investigated the influence of friendly media on reading education among polytechnic undergraduates in Nigeria. The study was aimed at testing the reading tendencies of polytechnic students in order to find the benefits of reading, hinderances to lesson, social radio habits and in consideration of social media influence on examination culture. The study is a explanatory survey research which examined polytechnic students at the National Diploma and the Higher National Diploma levels comprehensively Federal and State Government owned Polytechnics in Edo and Delta States namely, Auchi Polytechnic (350) National Institute of Construction Technology and Management Uromi (50), Edo State Polytechnic Usen (250), Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku (300), Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara (300), Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro (250). The organized questionnaire was secondhand for data accumulation. Research assistants were inducted to assist in the administration of questionnaires on respondents and recovery of same from ruling class. 1460 completed questionnaires were restored representing 97.3%. Data reasoning was done using graphical charts. The verdicts indicate that adulthood of the students don’t repeatedly read as it takes ruling class between 2-6 days before they read by any means and the students give an hour or less each period they read. The greatest benefit they come from reading is confidence in examinations and revised academic performance. The public media is the bigger hindrance to education, as majority of the students use the friendly media day-to-day and some of ruling class to as much as 7 hours continually. Majority of the students prefer utilizing social television to reading. It was accordingly recommended that friendly media should be joined into lecture delivery planks, while the education and ICT tactics should be inspected. While Librarians and Civil Societies to engage in advocacy campaigns, Librarians need to expand their skills sets for upgraded service transmittal.
