Isolation of Diarrhea Causing Organisms (Salmonella and Shigella) from Selected Seafood | .... ... .

The research looked into the existence of species that cause diarrhoea (Shigella and Salmonella) in a variety of seafood.

The research was conducted using a fully randomised experimental design.

Between January 2020 and February 2020, at the Department of Medical Microbiology, Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).

Methodology: A simple random technique was used to collect appropriate quantities of five different fresh raw seafoods (shrimp, periwinkle, crab, sardine fish, and mudskipper) from various fish harbours and fish markets in Port Harcourt (Nembe waterside, Abonema Wharf, and 1 Fish Market), and the bacteriological quality of each was assessed. The sampling was done in a cross-sectional manner. Normal bacteriological analytical methods were used for the isolation and identification of isolates. The research was carried out using SPSS version 23 and used frequency counts, percentages, and one-way ANOVA statistics. Since, at the 0.05 level of significance, one-way ANOVA statistics were used to assess the study's hypothesis, whereas Tukey's test was used to rank the means.

The findings revealed that Salmonella and Shigella were found in 53 percent of the isolates (eight out of fifteen). Furthermore, all of the seafood samples tested contained unacceptable levels of Salmonella and Shigella contamination, ranging from 1.79 x107 CFU/g to 2.96 x107 CFU/g. Sardine> Periwinkle> Shrimps> Mudskipper> Crab. The amount of contamination contained in the selected seafood is listed in descending order from highest to lowest: Sardine> Periwinkle> Shrimps> Mudskipper> Crab. Furthermore, the hypothesis revealed that there was a substantial mean difference in the count of Salmonella and Shigella among selected seafood (P.001).

Conclusion: The findings of this study can be used as a measure of faecal pollution in seafood purchased from Port Harcourt fish markets. It was suggested that the government enact legislation prohibiting the disposal of untreated waste into bodies of water, among other things.
