Overview of the Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Residency Training in Surgery and Related Specialties
Background: The entire lockdown in Nigeria earlier this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected surgical treatment and training in all dimensions because, aside from COVID-19 patients, most emergency cases were seen. Following the lockdown and the gradual introduction of out-patient and elective surgical treatment and other medical services, efforts to avoid virus transmission in our daily surgical practise, as well as the introduction of virtual meetings and training, will become the new normal.
The purpose of this research is to analyse the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on surgical residency training in Northcentral Nigeria.
Methodology: An online questionnaire was distributed to residency training tertiary centres in Northcentral Nigeria to achieve the goal.
Results: We discovered that the epidemic had a distinct impact on different areas of training, and that unique tactics were used to mitigate the impact.
Conclusion: Despite a reduction in core surgical training activities, there were efforts in place to reduce the pandemic's detrimental impact by streamlining care to safeguard the surgical community and implementing innovative approaches to sustain learning. Even after the pandemic, there remains a need to incorporate these innovative procedures into standard surgical training in the sub-region.
