Pattern of Fish Consumption and Fish Distribution: A Study on Sunyani Municipality, Ghana | Asian ..

Because of the growing recognition of the health and economic benefits of fish to Ghanaian households, fish consumption and marketing has become a common occurrence. Given this, the study used semi-structured interview guides administered to fifty (50) consumers and fifty (50) fish traders to determine the trend of fish consumption and distribution channels. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used to analyse the data (SPSS). The most common fish to eat were Scomber japonicus, Sardinella aurita, Trachurus trachurus, and Clarias gariepinus. On the basis of taste, flavour, and shelf life, the majority of customers favoured smoked salmon to other fish products. Dietary wholesomeness is also essential. According to the findings of the binary logistic model, educated respondents, as well as those under the age of 20, may be more susceptible to calcium deficiency diseases, particularly if they do not consume supplementary calcium sources in their diets. Sunyani, Yeji, Techiman, Cape Cost, and Buipe were the suppliers of fish to the fish traders. The study found that frozen and smoked fish products have basic and complex marketing and distribution networks, respectively. The key issue that fish traders and customers faced was fish spoilage. To minimise the rate of fish spoilage, fish traders should be educated on proper fish handling techniques. Sensitization to the situation Market campaigns promoting the use of fish products in their entirety must be encouraged.
