Prevalence and Intensity of Urinary Schistosomiasis among the Primary School Children of Some ...
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and severity of Urinary Schistosomiasis among Primary School children in Shinkafi Local Government Area, Zamfara State, Nigeria. The study was planned to reach a total of 400 primary school students from four (4) villages across Shinkafi Local Government's ten (10) districts. From August 2017 to March 2018, I studied at Badarawa, Kware, Jengeru, and Kurya primary schools in the Shinkafi local government area of Zamfara State. Methodology: Using clean sample bottles covered with screw cups, 400 urine samples were obtained from primary schools in Badarawa, Kware, Kurya, and Jangeru villages. After filtration, the samples were visually and microscopically examined. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and binary logistic regression analysis were used to statistically interpret all of the findings. Results: A total of 172 pupils tested positive for Schistosoma haematobium, with a prevalence of 43.3 percent and an average egg density of 11.45 egg/10 ml of urine. Pupils with blood brown urine had a slightly higher infection rate of 76.0 percent and a higher density of 16.81 egg/10 ml of urine. Pupils from Badarawa primary schools had the highest prevalence (73.0%), as well as the highest egg intensity (26.94 egg/10 ml of urine), with a substantial correlation for prevalence and a significant difference for mean egg intensity. In the research, prevalence and severity were found to be non-significant based on gender, age groups, and parent occupations. Conclusion: Based on urine colour and primary schools, prevalence and severity were substantially high. For potential preventive steps, mass chemotherapy and awareness among students and people in the study areas should be considered.
