Psychosocial and Demographic Variables as Correlates of Patterns of Substance Abuse among in-...

The study's main goal is to look at psychosocial and demographic variables as predictors of psychoactive substance misuse trends among patients admitted to opioid treatment centres in two Nigerian federal mental health institutions.

Descriptive correlational analysis design was used in this study.

The study took place in February 2018 at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital (Aro & Lantoro Annex) in Abeokuta and the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.

The sample size for this study is 224 patients admitted to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital (Aro & Lantoro Annex) Abeokuta and the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, for treatment of psychoactive substance abuse. Data on psychosocial and demographic variables that may explain the trends of substance abuse among were collected using a self-developed, pre-tested semi structured interviewer administered questionnaire. At the 0.05 level of significance, data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

The study discovered that social, psychological, and demographic influences all have a substantial impact on psychoactive drug use (F (6, 213) =23.214, P=0.07), Adj R2 =.158 (F (3, 216) =33.193, P=0.000), Adj R2 =.104, (F (6, 213) =10.101, P=0.031), Adj R2 =.062, respectively. Accessibility, family use, affordability, and peer use all had beneficial effects on psychoactive drug use, with values of =.81, P = 000, =.127, P =.037, =.118, P = 0.011, and =.139, P =.009, respectively. Perception, impulsivity, and self-gratification all had a positive and important impact on psychoactive drug use, with values of =.148, P = 047, =.197, P =.000, and =.107, P = 0.03 respectively. Age (x2 = 21.347, P =.009), gender (x2 = 5.432, P =.003), marital status (x2 = 2.707, P =.034), and faith (x2 = 4.119, P =.009) were all found to have a major impact on substance abuse patterns.

Conclusion: The report found that social, psychological, and demographic variables are the most significant predictors of psychoactive drug misuse among patients admitted to and treated in the Neuropsychiatric Hospitals studied.
