Social Media Use in Libraries and Information Services in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions | Asian....
The aim of the study was to explore how social media is used in Nigerian libraries and information services. The review went into great detail about the changes that social media has brought to library facilities in Nigerian universities. The influence of technological advancements in the twenty-first century, such as the introduction of social media, on library and information services in Nigeria, as well as anywhere else on the planet, is important. With the advent of social networking platforms such as Facebook, Myspace, Flickr, Twitter, Library Thing, and Ning, professionals in library science and services must adapt their service delivery to end users along the lines of social media use. As a result, libraries in Nigeria face challenges in delivering proactive and more value-added facilities to meet the ever-changing needs of their patrons. The reviewed article aimed to look at the current state of library services delivery in Nigerian tertiary institutions using these modern and evolving social media platforms, as well as the challenges that Nigerian tertiary institution libraries face in using these social media and potential solutions to these challenges. The study concluded that librarians have adopted social media use in tertiary institutions libraries in Nigeria to some degree, and that librarians' use of social media in promoting library and information tools and services cannot be overemphasised. The study also discovered that the use of social media in Nigerian tertiary institution libraries is hindered by a lack of or insufficient financial resources, weak power supply, a lack of social media training for library workers, and restricted bandwidth in the institution. As a result, the study suggests that the parent institutions provide sufficient funding to the libraries in order to expand the use of social media to promote library and information tools and services in Nigerian tertiary institution libraries.
