Twilight Zones and the Cultural Production of Violence in Nepal | Asian Journal of Language, ......

Following allegations that he was misappropriating relief products in the aftermath of a natural disaster, Hyonju, an ex-M.P. (Member of Parliament), was dragged through the streets of his home town of Bhaktapur, Nepal, to his death in 1988. Rumors of corruption were common in Nepalese politics, but the ritual execution of the accused was not. The aim of this research is to look into the historical circumstances surrounding Hyonju's death, starting with the formation of the Nepali nation-state in the late 1700s and ending with the country's growing disenfranchisement and political unrest. prior to the absolute monarchy's overthrow in 1990. The article explains how the city of Bhaktapur developed a distinct social, political, and religious identity that set it apart from the capital and royal family. Tantric rituals, a central component of this mechanism of self-differentiation and a source of legitimacy for Bhaktapur's deposed rulers and political leaders, are given special attention. Hyoju's positionality put his life in jeopardy by situating him inside and between the previously identified historical divisions in a Foucauldian twilight zone, according to the paper's main finding.
